Honors World Literature

Analysis & Articulation

This course focuses on the study of World Literature, writing modes and genres, and essential conventions for reading, writing, and speaking. The student develops an understanding of chronological context and the relevance of thematic structures in World Literature. The students develop an understanding of the ways the thematic study of literature is similar in structure and how the societal issues surrounding the work affects its meaning. The students read a variety of informational and literary texts in all genres and modes of discourse. Reading across the curriculum develops students’ academic and personal interests in different subjects. While argumentative writing is one focus in World Literature, the students will also demonstrate competency in a variety of writing genres: narrative, expository/explanatory. The student will engage in research, timed writing, and the writing process. Instruction in language conventions will occur within the context of reading, writing, and speaking. The students will demonstrate an understanding of listening, speaking, and viewing skills for a variety of purposes.

Personal & Professional Skills

Life Skills & Personal Qualities

Personal And Professional Skills (PPS) is designed to introduce students to life skills and to help students operate in a variety of contexts, now and in the future. The PPS course will not only develop skills, but also attitudes. In the context of the IBCP, the term “attitudes” refers to dispositions or attributes. In addition, the PPS course aims to develop personal qualities and values as exemplified in the learner profile.


The purpose of PPS is to support students in their career-related studies, link the core components together, and to provide students the skills necessary to become active lifelong learners.

Elective Courses

The elective courses are provided for students to experience and explore important life skills such as responsibility, integrity, time management and leadership. Both tabs contain information that is useful, relevant and reliable insofar as assisting students with becoming more well-rounded and prepared to compete in a global society.

Entrepreneurship

The vision of Youth Entrepreneurship (YE) is to engender self-reliance among youth by introducing, through entrepreneurship, the values and skills necessary for them to lead successful, fulfilling lives as contributing members of society. Youth Entrepreneurs is a high school elective course that introduces the concept of entrepreneurship and the importance of small business to national and world economies. Through a hands-on learning experience and the creation of their own business idea, students gain knowledge of business ownership, economics and finance while developing the moral character necessary to achieve lifelong success. The goals of YE are for each student to: seek out the knowledge to learn how to run a real business; pursue education beyond high school; and become a successful employee or business owner.

Journalism I & II

These courses are designed to teach students the fundamentals of yearbook production beginning with a foundation in newspaper. Students in Journalism I will learn the basics of newspaper production demonstrating developing skills in writing for different audiences and occasions; develop listening and critical thinking skills; as well as practicing ethical journalism and photojournalism. Students in Journalism II will demonstrate the development of skills in the following areas: page production, interviewing, writing copy, editing, photography, business etiquette, marketing, advertising, sales and distribution. There is a heavy emphasis on journalism skills therefore thoughtful, expressive writing is a must! Students who participate in this course will gain real world experience in time management, team work and problem-solving techniques.
